11-3-10: Transformers - Prime

An Uber-Geek Moment...

There is one thing I have never grown out of. That would be Transformers. Since I was a little kid I have been obsessed with these battling alien robots from the planet Cybertron. I have watched every series, read every comic book and have a few boxes full of unopened toys. It's my guilty pleasure.

Through the years the Transformers have had different looks and continuities. I grew up with what is regularly known as Generation One. In the 90's they tried an unsuccessful attempt at a Generation 2. They did succeed with a new line of toys and a CGI show called "Beast Wars." In the 2000's Hasbro put out Transformers:Energon, Transformers:Cybertron and Transformers:Armada. Then Michael Bay made the Transformers movies which coincided with the release of the most recent Transformers animated series called "Transformers: Animated."

Most of these series had their own continuity. Except for maybe one or two, they had no link story-wise with each other. Each series had something that worked. Too bad what worked wasn't carried over into other series.

That is until now.

This past summer a video game was released called Transformers:Cybertron. The game reimagined the origin story of the Transformers and why they left their planet to fight on Earth. I own the game and enjoyed playing it just to unlock scenes to see how the story progressed. Hasbro saw they had something that can make money and to my excitement decided to create something to milk me for all of my money.

Around Thanksgiving a new Transformer series is coming out called Transformers: Prime. From what I have read it will be a direct connection to the video game story and bring components from each Transformer series into this one continuity. I have seen the cast list and there are characters from every series showing up for the new tv show. The art looks like it's from the Michael Bay movies. The best part is that the voice actors from the Generation One series will be reprising their roles, plus the cool transformation noise is back.

Here is a promo for the new series. I'm totally geeked out over this.
